Temescal Neighbors is the official Neighborhood Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) for Police Beat 12X, Area 2, (a.k.a. Temescal). We are a volunteer organization working closely with City of Oakland officials and departments on projects to make the Temescal Neighborhood a safer and better place to live and work. Such projects include crime prevention, wildfire safety, emergency preparedness and response, beautification, and other projects that promote community betterment.

How Temescal Neighbors is Different
As a formal entity of Oakland Neighborhood division and its community policing strategy, there’s a pretty standard format for NCPC meetings. They re bi-monthly opportunities to meet with the police and talk about issues in the hood. With our brand new NCPC we’ve expanded beyond that format. In addition to our “public meetings”, we are engaging together in a neighborhood democracy experiment. We’ve been trying to organize these on alternating months.
Public Meetings
Public Meetings follow a bi-monthly schedule (1st Tuesday of EVEN months at 6-7:30pm) and have a meeting format similar to that of other Neighborhood Councils in Oakland. These meetings are an opportunity to connect with neighbors, learn about neighborhood projects and discuss local issues. We’re trying to organize a presentation about topics of interest (send in suggestions please). A Community Resource Officer from Oakland Police Department will come to these meetings at 7pm.
Neighborhood Democracy Project
Temescal Neighbors is exploring democratic innovations to deepen engagement and community belonging. This has included the Neighborhood survey and dialogue. These generated the our neighborhood Values and our first set of Neighborhood Interest Groups (below). As we develop these projects we will have more surveys, dialogues, and other democratic tools in the future. Learn more here, www.temescalneighbors.org/democracy
